Community batteries

We’re connecting community batteries to our Low Voltage Network in neighbourhoods across Queensland.

They’re storing the extra solar energy from rooftops across the community, for use locally when demand for electricity is high.

Together we’re creating a smarter, cleaner energy future – one that’s both great for the environment and can bring down the cost of energy for all.

Our Battery Neighbourhoods

1499736

We are connecting community-level batteries on our power poles and ground mounted batteries in eleven neighbourhoods across Queensland.

It all started with the Ipswich Neighbourhood Battery Trial, which has seen over 30 batteries installed in Raceview, Goodna, Flinders View, Silkstone, Bellbird Park and Redbank Plains.

This investment, in partnership with electricity retailer Origin Energy, helped advance our understanding of the benefits and challenges of network-connected energy storage, and to create more Battery Neighbourhoods as well as installing other community-level batteries across the state.

See Talking Energy our community engagement website for more information.

Government programs supporting community batteries

Through the Australian Government's Community Batteries for Household Solar Program, we're connecting community batteries into the local electricity network in 12 different communities across Queensland.

With the support of Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) Community Battery Funding, under ARENA’s Advancing Renewables Program, we are connecting them in clusters – 69 community batteries across eight neighbourhoods throughout Queensland.

These programs are being boosted by our investment in another 30 community-level batteries in our North Townsville and Caloundra network zones. We have recently rescoped this investment to better ensure the engineering and economic challenges are more fully considered.

The batteries are being installed now though to 2027. Once installed, they will support our customers' take-up of rooftop solar exports, and help us further develop the road map to an efficient and equitable customer-led renewable energy transition.

Together with our customers we can:

  • support more clean energy made, stored and used locally
  • reduce the network investment by smoothing Queensland’s peak solar energy profile
  • ready the grid for more electric vehicles
  • help move us towards the Queensland Government’s target of net zero emissions by 2050.

Sharing the benefits

As part of the government programs, we’re sharing the ‘battery benefits’ locally with the community through our Community Fund.

We are especially interested in disaster preparedness or other community resilience projects, or anything supporting the renewable energy transition including solar, battery storage, energy literacy and electrification.

If you apply, make sure you let us know you heard about the Community Fund through a ‘community battery promotion’.
