Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred Update - 10 March

Electricity network update on ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred, Monday 10 March.

Our response

  • In the past 24 hours our crews, in the face of shocking weather, still got 137,000 additional homes and businesses back online.
  • One crew member said restoring power in yesterday’s torrential rain was “like someone spraying you directly in the face with a garden hose while you’re trying to get a job done!”
  • Overall, since the cyclone started to impact the coast, crews have now restored more than half of the affected customers and today aim to make another good dent in the numbers with around 2,000 staff out there in the field from as far away as Cairns.
  • Below is the latest breakdown of the properties left to restore from Energex power outages - Energex Emergency Outages
  • Ergon Energy Network power outages - Outage Finder.

Safety tips

  • Switch off cooking equipment. Some people may have been using electric ovens and hotplates when the cyclone cut their power. Ensure they are switched to the off position because power may be restored while the appliance is unattended.
  • Floodwaters and electricity. Don’t enter any floodwaters that are inundating our electrical assets. There’s a possibility the water surrounding the equipment may become energised.
