Change or remove your electricity service
Whether you’re upgrading your supply, renovating, demolishing or relocating a building, it pays to know what’s involved before you get started.
You’ll find the key costs, steps and timeframes below, so you can plan with confidence and avoid surprises.
Changing your electricity connection or metering
If you request work at your electricity connection, like installing, changing or removing a meter or upgrading your supply, there may be fees involved.
These charges come from your local electricity distributor and are known as Alternative Control Services (ACS) charges. Depending on the work:
- The distributor may charge you directly, or
- They may charge us, and we’ll pass the cost on through your electricity bill.
The standard costs for these services can be found on the distributor’s website.
Temporary disconnections
Some jobs mean your power needs to be turned off and back on again for a short time. This is called a temporary de-energisation and re-energisation.
There are different types, depending on the work being done. Fees apply, and you’ll find full pricing on the found on the distributor’s website.

The distribution service provider will liaise with you or your contractor on when is the best time to return to re-energise the premises.

Requesting to remove a service
Need to permanently remove an electricity service? You can request this online.
You’ll need to be the person responsible for paying the supply abolishment fees.
If you’re asking to remove the electricity service line and equipment, including the meter, and we were the last retailer for that site, we can help you through the process.
How to request a supply or meter removal
- Complete all fields on the form except where indicated.
- Submit a separate application form for each site.
- Include meter numbers for all meters that are to be removed. Meter numbers are on each meter.
- Provide access to the meter box and service line for the work to be carried out. If access is insufficient for the work to be completed, a standard call out fee may be charged.
- Ensure the property is vacant, as work cannot start until the property is vacant.

Costs to remove the service
Please note this is a quoted service, prices will vary depending on location, if traffic control is required or if the premise is CT metered. Price is capped at a maximum of $2425.24. All rates include GST.

When you submit an application you will be considered to have agreed for these fees to be charged to you.
What happens next?
The date you request is your preferred date. The actual work date depends on crew availability and the scope of work.
Once your request is passed to the service provider:
- Services in urban areas are usually removed within 22 business days
- Timeframes for rural or isolated areas will be agreed directly with the service provider.
After the service is removed, the National Metering Identifier (NMI) for the site is cancelled.
Reconnecting power to the site
To connect an electricity service after it has been removed, you will need to request a new connection. This will involve a new National Metering Identifier (NMI) being allocated.
