How small business tariffs work
Running a business is tough enough. Understanding tariffs shouldn’t be.
Let’s break down the components that make up our small business tariffs:
- Usage charges This is your total usage for the billing period. You pay for each kWh used. This can be charged at a flat rate or based on ‘time of use’ pricing, meaning the cost will vary depending on the days and times when power was used.
- Service fee A daily fee that helps cover the cost of supplying your service. This includes building and maintaining transmission and powerlines, billing and administration.
- Demand charges Demand charges only apply to demand tariffs. Your electricity demand is based on your highest electricity use in a 30-minute window during the evening peak period. The demand charge is based on the single highest spike during your billing cycle - not your total usage. Managing when you use appliances can help reduce demand spikes, and potentially lower costs. Demand tariffs can help you save if you can minimise your use during peak periods.
Primary tariff options
A primary tariff is the main supply tariff for your business, where the majority of your appliances, lighting and equipment are connected and powered day to day. We have a range of primary tariff options designed to suit different business types, so you can choose the one that best matches how your business operates.
In short: Tariff 20 suits businesses wanting simplicity. Tariffs 22D and 22E reward off-peak usage. Tariff 24 suits businesses that can reduce usage and demand during evening peaks.

Demand charging explained
How is demand calculated?
We look at the 30-minute window between 5pm and 8pm on any day in the month when you used the most electricity. That’s your peak moment.
Here’s how we work it out:
- Convert the peak to kilowatts: We take your highest 30-minute usage in kilowatt-hours, then double it to get kilowatts (kW). Why double? Because we’re converting half an hour into an hourly measure.
- Apply the demand rate: Then we multiply that by the daily rate ($/kW/day) and the number of days in your billing period.
- How the daily rate is set: The demand charge is displayed on a monthly basis, but billed based on the number of days in the billing period. To get the daily rate, the monthly calculation needs to be multiplied by 12 and then divided by 365.25.
This helps cover the cost of keeping the network ready when demand is at its highest - so everyone stays powered up when it matters most.

If you don’t see this option, you might still have a basic meter. In that case, please call us on 1300 135 210. Changing your meter may involve extra costs, which vary depending on your situation. We’ll explain any costs when you contact us about a tariff change.
Economy tariffs - For specific appliances
Economy tariffs are great for appliances like hot water systems, pool pumps and EV chargers that don't need constant power.
They're cheaper because the operating times are controlled by Ergon Energy Network and can change day to day, depending on network demand.

Is Tariff 34 right for your business?
Use this quick guide to see if Tariff 34 could work for you
- Check your area - You need to be in a dynamic control or time switch area. Visit Ergon Network's demand management page for business customers to find out. Good to know: If your business uses more than 100 MWh a year, your connection may be reclassified. If that happens, Tariffs 60A and 60B won’t be available.
- Make sure interruptions are OK - Tariff 34 can be switched off at times. Ask yourself: Can your equipment turn off and on safely? Can your business handle short outages? If not, this tariff may not be the right fit.
- Talk to your electrician - You don’t need to know the technical details. Ask your electrician to: Check your equipment is suitable for Tariff 34. Confirm whether a contractor is needed. If a contractor is required, your electrician will organise and install it (costs apply).
- Check eligibility and apply -
- ✅ Business customers can apply
- ❌ Residential customers can’t access Tariff 34.
Already on Tariff 31 or 33?
You can switch to Tariff 34. If approved, Ergon Energy Network will update your meter or control equipment.
Your electrician can help with the application.
Not the right fit?
You might prefer a continuous supply tariff, like:
- Tariff 20 (anytime), or
- Tariff 22 D/E (time of use).
Talk to our regional Queensland team or your electrician to find what works best for your business.
