Estimated bills

You might sometimes receive a bill based on an estimate rather than an actual meter read. This happens when we can’t safely access your meter on the day of your read.

This page explains why estimated bills happen, how to request an adjusted bill, and what you can do to help avoid estimates in the future.

Received an estimated bill?

You may get an estimated bill if we couldn’t access your meter to take a reading.
A few things can block safe access to your meter, including:

  • Unrestrained dogs
  • Locked gates
  • Overgrown vegetation
  • Other access issues.

If your bill is estimated, you’ll see a message in the ‘My meter reading and access’ section on page two of your bill.

estimated read

Typically, estimated meter reads are based on your historical electricity usage data.
Once we’re able to read your meter again, your next bill will be adjusted to reflect your actual usage.
To help us read your meter next time, you can check out tips for safe and convenient access below.

Request an adjusted bill

Want a more accurate bill sooner? You can send us your own meter read and ask for a new bill with an updated due date.

When we can accept your read

Energy legislation sets the rules for when we’re allowed to reissue a bill using your replacement meter read.

This option is available if:

  • You have a basic meter (not a smart meter), and
  • You use up to 100 MWh of electricity per year.

Your replacement read must also:

  • Be provided after your estimated bill is issued
  • Reach us before the bill’s due date
  • Be equal to or higher than the most recent actual read
  • Match the numbering format of your meter.

To request an adjusted bill, call our regional Queensland team on 13 10 46.

How to read your meter

There are a few different types of electricity meters out there, and they don’t all look or work the same. If you ever need to read yours, we’ve put together a handy step‑by‑step guide to help you get it right. See how to read your meter.

How to prevent estimated bills

Ditch the manual meter reads with a smart meter

Unlike traditional basic meters, smart meters automatically send electricity usage so your bill can be calculated accurately without someone having to manually read the meter.
You can request a smart meter in a few clicks with our online form.

Provide safe access to your meter

A clear path to your meter means safer visits for meter readers and more accurate bills for you. Here are the simple ways you can help us safely access your meter:

Secure your pets

  • Meter readers can’t take risks around dogs. Please keep pets safely restrained and away from the meter.
  • You can update your dog details anytime in My Account, or call us on 13 10 46.

Use an authorised lock

  • If your gate needs to stay locked, choose an approved meter reader friendly lock.
  • Queensland Locksmiths offer a full range of authorised options.
  • You can tell us about special access locks (like an Ergon lock) by calling 13 10 46.

Keep access clear

Trim back overgrown vegetation and remove anything blocking the path to the meter. Safe, tidy access helps us complete your read without delay.

Report access issues

If you have a locked gate, construction work, or anything else we should know about, give us a call on 13 10 46 so we can plan ahead.

Consider relocating your meter

If your meter is tucked away or hard to reach, a licensed electrical contractor can help you explore moving it to a safer, more accessible spot - especially if you’re renovating or building.

Get 24hour meter read alerts

You can register with Ergon Energy Network to receive SMS or email alerts a day before your meter is due to be read.

Know how to read your own meter

If you ever need to provide a read yourself, our handy guide shows you how - no matter what type of meter you have.

Find out more about meter readings and access at the Ergon Energy Network website.

When is my next meter read?

You’ll find the approximate date of your next meter read on the last page of your electricity bill under ‘Bill messages’.
