Cairns apprentice wins two awesome awards

Taking home two titles from the Awesome Women in Construction Awards capped off a massive year for Cairns apprentice Taylah Smith, who was named the 2025 Young Achiever and Young Leader.

“It is an honour to be recognised amongst so many amazing women and to be rewarded for your achievements is an incredible feeling.

“These awards are a reminder of how far I have come throughout my apprenticeship and a testament to all the mentors who have helped me along the way.

“I am thankful to have had incredible work group leaders and an awesome apprentice coordinator who has taken the time to mentor me and support me with my goals and ambitions,” Taylah said.

The high achiever is on track to finish her electrotechnology electrician apprenticeship by the end of the year and is in her final trimester of an associate degree in electrical engineering.

“I have worked hard to manage both and I’m proud to say that I have secured a position in the Cairns customer service group upon successful completion of my apprenticeship.

“To secure a permanent position, after four years of hard work is something every apprentice should be proud to achieve,” Taylah said.

Taylah’s next goal is to complete a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering, which will open up even more options.

“I have been lucky enough in my apprenticeship to have worked in the new technology space, which would be incredible to revisit one day.

“Overall, it is hard to say where I would like to take my career as there is so much to learn within this business and so much innovation coming into the electrical space,” she said.

Ergon award-winning apprentice The 2025 Young Leader is clear on what it takes to inspire people.

“A great leader is someone who leads by example - they work hard, are approachable, and aren’t afraid to give you feedback,” Taylah said.

Her advice for aspiring apprentices is simple yet inspirational.

“Don't be afraid to work hard, be the first one at the depot, and always put your hand up to help and take an interest in your work.

“People are always willing to help and teach if you are interested.

“Always stay open to learning, build your confidence and keep showing up with a smile on your face.”
