PeakSmart air conditioning
PeakSmart is a new solution to help manage peak demand on the electricity network. You can get cashback when you install a PeakSmart air conditioner OR convert your existing air conditioner to PeakSmart.
Get up to $400 cashback
If you’re connected to our network and you install a new PeakSmart air conditioner, or convert an existing air conditioner to PeakSmart, you can apply for cashback of up to $400!
Residential customers can claim the cashback for up to 5 air conditioners and there is no limit for business customers1. Please note cashback is not available on air conditioners connected to an economy tariff (for example Tariff 33 Economy). The cashback is based on the cooling capacity (measured in kW) of the air conditioner:
- $200 cashback – 4kW to less than 10kW cooling capacity
- $400 cashback – 10kW or more cooling capacity.
Eligible PeakSmart areas
Most residential and business customers are eligible for a PeakSmart cashback. There are some areas where customers are not able to claim a cashback because we aren’t able to send signals to PeakSmart air conditioners (for example some rural, isolated community networks and end of grid areas).
To confirm your eligibility, go to the Eligible PeakSmart areas map and check that your premises is located in a shaded area.
Please make sure you review the PeakSmart Terms & Conditions.
Retailers and installers of PeakSmart air conditioning who would like more information or to register to be a part of the program please go to the PeakSmart for retailers & installers page.
There are two ways to get cashback
- Install a new PeakSmart air conditioner If you’re thinking of purchasing a new air conditioner, it makes sense to buy one that’s PeakSmart capable so you can get cashback. PeakSmart air conditioners work just like ordinary air conditioners and most leading brands offer a range of PeakSmart models. Your installer needs to make your air conditioner PeakSmart Active when they install it, OR
- Convert your existing air conditioner to PeakSmart PeakSmart air conditioners have been around since 2011. So if you installed a new air conditioner in the last five years, it may be a PeakSmart model. If it is contact your local installer so they can come to your home or business to convert it to PeakSmart Active. Some installers may do this for free, provided there aren’t any complications, and be reimbursed through the Incentives program.
Claiming your cashback
Make sure your installer gives you an invoice showing the make and model number of the air conditioner installed and a completed PeakSmart Installation Form (PDF 92.2 kb) which you’ll need to include with your cashback application. If you’re converting your existing air conditioner to PeakSmart Active the installer can apply for the cashback incentive on your behalf.
How is PeakSmart set up?
A PeakSmart Ready air conditioner has been manufactured to allow a small signal receiver to be fitted. The receiver is installed in your PeakSmart Ready air conditioner when you are having your new air conditioner installed, or can be retrofitted to your existing PeakSmart Ready air conditioner. The receiver must be fitted by a licensed installer. Once the receiver is installed, your air conditioner is PeakSmart Active.
How do I get a PeakSmart signal receiver for my air conditioner?
Your signal receiver will be provided by your air-conditioning installer, when you have a PeakSmart air-conditioner installed, or for an existing PeakSmart air conditioner. Talk to your installer before they visit you to ensure that they bring along a PeakSmart signal receiver. You should not be charged for the supply of the receiver, as Ergon Energy provides those free of charge to local installers and a/c retailers.
Do I have to pay to have the signal receiver installed?
Installing a signal receiver in a PeakSmart air conditioner should only take 5-10 minutes and most installers will do this for free or for a small additional fee. We recommend you discuss this with your installer before proceeding with the installation.
How does PeakSmart compare to connecting your air conditioner to Tariff 33?
PeakSmart mode and economy Tariff 33 are only activated on a few days of the year, for short periods of time, when the electricity network reaches peak demand in extreme weather conditions. With economy Tariff 33 the power to your air conditioner will be turned off and your air conditioner will not work when there is an extreme weather event. The advantage of PeakSmart is that your air conditioner will keep running in economy mode during the same extreme weather event, and you shouldn’t notice any difference to your comfort levels. Also, PeakSmart is quite simple to set up and unlike Tariff 33 does not require any electrical rewiring back to the switchboard and a receiver is simply installed in your PeakSmart air conditioner. Please note you cannot connect your air conditioner to PeakSmart if it is already connected to Tariff 33.
How does PeakSmart work?
Once your PeakSmart air conditioner has been made PeakSmart Active by your installer, we can send a signal to it through the electricity network to temporarily reduce its consumption. This is similar to putting your air conditioner into economy mode and is only ever done when the electricity network reaches peak demand.
How often is PeakSmart activated and will it impact on my comfort levels?
PeakSmart mode is only activated on a few days of the year, for short periods of time, when the electricity network reaches peak demand in extreme weather conditions. As your air conditioner keeps running, you won't notice any difference to your comfort levels. Some air conditioner model displays indicate when they are operating in PeakSmart mode.
Which air conditioners offer PeakSmart?
The majority of the leading air conditioner brands offer a range of PeakSmart air conditioners and have done so for the past few years. They are priced similar to traditional air conditioners.
PeakSmart air-conditioning adheres to industry standards. The technology is designed to be set and forget, similar to your air-conditioner being in economy mode. You won't have to do anything and you won't notice a difference to your comfort.
Check out our list of eligible PeakSmart Ready air conditioners that are available in the market place today. Or look for the Star Rating sticker on the air conditioner – eligible PeakSmart Ready models must have a tick in each box at the bottom of the label.
Will PeakSmart affect my warranty?
Fitting a signal receiver to your PeakSmart Ready air conditioner will not affect its existing manufacturer warranty, as these air conditioners have been designed to incorporate this technology
