Ingham substation upgrade

We’ve completed the first stage of works to boost the flood resilience of the substation that supplies electricity to customers in Ingham and surrounding areas.

The $1.61 million project was based on a detailed flood study and funded under the joint Commonwealth-State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements.

Building back better

We have raised the height of some critical infrastructure to above February 2025 flood levels, which has now improved the flood resilience of the Ingham Substation.

This includes relocating multiple 66,000-volt plant marshalling boxes and alterations to breathers connected to transformers, to avoid inundation and oil contamination.

We have installed a more sophisticated flood monitoring system, including new analytical cameras and upgraded communications to our network control centre.

This will enable us to monitor water levels within the substation in real time and ensure the high-voltage site is secure for the community’s safety. The data will be a game changer in emergency response.

Next steps

While the project outlined above was delivered as a quick win within ten months of the February 2025 major flood, and before the 2025/26 wet season, it is just the start of a range of upgrades planned for the Ingham Substation.

Our engineering grid projects team is in the process of planning the next stage.

Keeping you informed

We are committed to working closely with all levels of Government to deliver a solution that ensures the long-term security of the electricity supply for the flood-prone community and we will keep customers informed of our plans when they are finalised.
