Energy resource register

For a limited time, if you register your battery storage system with us we’ll give you $50 cashback! Even if you installed your battery system some time ago, you can still claim the cashback.

A national register

The federal government is developing a national battery register but this won’t be available for some time. In the meantime we are capturing this important information ourselves for the following reasons:

Safety

It can be dangerous for emergency services to attend a fire if they aren’t aware a battery system is operational at the premises. Battery systems can also be a safety concern for our crews when they are working on our network, particularly when responding to natural disasters.

Demand management

Capturing battery system installation details in a centralised Energy Resource Register may also allow us to work with our customers in the future to address demand and voltage issues on the network.

Regulatory requirement

You may not be aware but it’s actually a regulatory requirement to submit a connection application to us seeking permission to connect your battery system. This is usually done by your installer prior to installation. Once we receive your connection application, we will assess it and make a connection offer.

Please note a connection application must be submitted and approved before we can pay the $50 cashback. If you don’t believe this has been done, please contact your installer and ask them to do this for you.

Before you register

Before submitting your claim for a cashback, please make sure you have read the Energy Resource Register Terms and Conditions and have the following handy:

  • National Metering Identifier (NMI) – found on your electricity bill
  • Battery storage system make and model number
  • Bank account details where you would like the cashback to be deposited
  • Network Connection (CX) number - we would have provided this after the battery system connection application was submitted and approved. If you don’t know the CX number you’ll need to provide your installer’s name and phone number in case we need to contact them.

Further information

For more information please see the frequently asked questions below.

What is the cashback offer?

If you register your battery storage system with us we’ll give you $50 cashback. This offer is available until the establishment of the national battery register.

Why are you offering the cashback?

We are offering the cashback to encourage everyone to register their battery system with us mainly for safety reasons. Battery storage systems can create a major safety concern for emergency services when they attend a fire if they are not aware a battery system is operational at the premises, as well as for our crews when working on our network, particularly when responding to natural disasters.

How do I submit a cashback claim?

Submit your claim using the online cashback application form. Simply enter:

  • your name, address, email and phone number
  • your National Metering Identifier (NMI) – found on your electricity bill
  • the battery storage system make and model
  • your bank account details where you would like the cashback to be deposited
  • the Network Connection CX number*. (If you don’t know the CX number then you’ll need to provide the installer’s name, email and phone number).

* A CX number is provided by us after your battery system connection application has been submitted and approved. We will check our systems to see if a battery system connection application has been submitted and if not we will follow up with your installer. A connection application must be approved before we can pay the $50 cashback.

What is a CX number?

The CX number is provided by us after a battery system connection application has been submitted and approved.

Can I submit my cashback application if I don’t have a CX number?

Yes. You can submit your application without a CX number if you provide us with details of your battery installer. We will check our systems to see if a battery system connection application has been submitted and approved. If one hasn’t, we will follow up with your installer. Once the connection application is submitted we’ll send a notification to the email address submitted with the application advising that the $50 cashback registration can now be completed.

Can I claim a cashback if I have moved location?

No. Only the current registered owner of the property or the current occupier of the property (who has obtained the property owner’s consent) where the battery is installed can claim the cashback.

Why is there an Energy Resource Register?

The Energy Resource Register has been created mainly for safety reasons. Battery storage systems can create a major safety concern for emergency services when they attend a fire if they are not aware a battery storage system is operational at the premises. It’s also a safety risk for our crews when managing the network, particularly when responding to natural disasters.

Capturing these details in a centralised register may also allow us to work with our customers in the future to use their battery systems to address demand and voltage issues on the network.

The Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO), along with Energex and Ergon Energy have identified the need for this register for network and market planning studies to drive efficient investment and operation of the network now and into the future.

Is there a national Energy Resource Register?

The federal government is developing a national battery register but this won’t be available for some time. In the meantime we are capturing this important information ourselves. We’ll make sure all the information we collect is included in the national register as soon as it is up and running.

Don’t you know who has installed a battery system?

Although there is a regulatory requirement to apply to connect a battery to our networks, we believe there are some battery systems that have been connected without our knowledge.

Am I required to submit a connection application for my battery storage system?

Yes. It is a regulatory requirement to submit a connection application for a solar PV system, battery storage system or other renewable energy system connected to our network. This is usually done for you by the installer. If you don’t believe a connection application has been submitted for your battery system, please contact your installer and ask them to do this for you.

Who can claim the cashback?

The cashback can be claimed by the registered owner of the property or the occupier of the property (who has obtained the property owner’s consent) where the battery is installed. The cashback offer is available to residential and business customers.

My battery system was installed a while ago – can I claim the cashback?

Yes. Regardless of how long ago your battery system was installed at your existing premises, you may claim the $50 cashback.

What battery systems are eligible for the cashback?

Eligible battery systems can be of any chemistry type and must have:

  • a capacity of greater than 1 kWh
  • an AS4777 compliant inverter that is less than 30 kVA and which is connected to the Energex or Ergon Energy distribution network area in Queensland (including Mount Isa and isolated systems).

I have more than one battery system – can I claim the cashback more than once?

Yes, you can claim a cashback provided it is an eligible battery for which you’ve completed a connection application and received an approved connection agreement from us.

Can I claim a cashback for my solar PV system?

No. This cashback is only available for battery storage systems.

Can my installer claim the cashback for my battery system?

No. Only the registered owner of the property or the occupier of the property (who has obtained the property owner’s consent) where the battery is installed can claim the cashback. If your installer has submitted a connection agreement and received the email with the CX number they should forward this onto you so you can submit your claim for the $50 cashback.

How long is the $50 cashback available?

Depending on whether start of the national register is delayed, the $50 cashback will be available until the national register is set up. Currently, the national register is predicted to be available from December 2018. If the start of the national register is delayed significantly or cancelled, we may decide to terminate the $50 cashback offer.

When will I get the cashback?

Once your cashback claim has been validated you’ll get an email from us. You should receive payment within 6 weeks of this email notification.

What if I still don’t receive my payment?

If 6 weeks have passed since you received the emailed claim validation notification, please call us on phone number 13 74 66.

What other incentives are available?

We have demand management programs which may provide incentives for reducing peak energy demand.
