Ergon Energy powers through restoration work after Maryborough flood

Ergon Energy Network has restored power to all customers in the Maryborough CBD that can be safely reconnected to the network.

Fraser Burnett Area Manager Nick Grant said crews had put in an extraordinary effort to get power back on after the devastating flooding that impacted the community over the weekend.

“It’s been a huge effort; our crews are part of this community - or from nearby - and it’s not just a job for them it’s about supporting their community,” Nick said.

“We’ve been able to restore power to more than 1700 customers in a very short time considering flooding created so many challenges for us with lack of access and the need to check equipment and connections were safe before we could give the go ahead to reconnect.”

There are still a small number of customers in Maryborough and Kilkivan without power due to the flood event and Ergon Energy Network is working to get these back on as quickly as possible.

“In some areas we have trees in lines and it will take time to get these cleared before we can safely re-energise,” Nick said.

“The safety of our community and our crews remains the key focus for us, even as we get close to getting all customers back on.”

Nick said if people did have water come through their properties or business, they must get it checked by a licensed electrician.

“If the recent torrential rain has made its way into the ceilings or walls of your home or floodwaters have entered the building, you must contact a licensed electrician to check for damage to the property’s electrical system,” he said.

“If your home or business is damaged preventing the reconnection of power, have a licensed electrical contractor repair electrical damage. Notify us when repairs are complete so power can be restored.”

“Likewise, any electrical household appliances that have been affected by water should be checked by a licensed electrical contractor before use or simply thrown away.”
