Ergon Energy restoring power in Gulf communities

The first 30 customers have been restored today in Ergon Energy’s restoration plan for Pormpuraaw in the wake of Tropical Cyclone Nora, with all customers expected back on by Easter Saturday.

There are 200 customers in Pormpuraaw without power.

Ergon Energy crews flew into Pormpuraaw on Monday morning to assess the damage in the remote community.

Area Manager Far North Charlie Casa said access to the community was limited, but Ergon Energy now had 24 crew in place with equipment and generators to start getting power back on.

“Tropical Cyclone Nora has caused a lot of damage to poles and wires and our crews need to complete repairs and progressively restore power.” Mr Casa said.

"We can also confirm that the power station was not damaged by the event."

“We’ve been restricted by the severe weather and the availability of suitable aircraft, but we’re in Pormpuraaw now.”

“Our first priority was to get power to the main street and key services for the community such as the sewage treatment and water supply, the hospital, school and general store and we’ve made great progress there,” Mr Casa said.

“We’ll then move onto repairing damage in other parts of the community and, provided the weather doesn’t cause more problems for us, we plan to have power back on by Easter Saturday.”
