Vandalism and rain interrupt Mt Isa power

Vandalism and rain combined to interrupt power to more than 1400 customers in two separate events in Mt Isa last night.

An Ergon Energy spokesman said vandals smashed a glass insulator on a power pole on the corner of Delta and Alpha Streets in Sunset.

"It's not known when the vandalism occurred however it caused electricity to leak onto the pole and combined with rain caused the power to catch fire.

"The power was shut down for safety reasons to 191 customers in the immediate area through to Able Smith Parade and Sunset Drive at 8pm.

"Crews responded and began repair work but were called away to a life threatening report of fallen powerlines on a vehicle at Moondarra Caravan Park. Power was also turned off to this area for safety reasons at10.17pm.

"However crews found there were no fallen powerlines but an SES vehicle had backed into a stay wire supporting a pole," he said.

Crews replaced the vandalised insulator in Sunset and power was restored to both areas at 10.45pm.

The spokesman encouraged people to report vandalism to police or Ergon on 132296.

'Vandalism of electricity assets is unacceptable, senseless and inconveniences people," he said.

Vandals can be prosecuted, fined and even gaoled especially if vandalism was found to have caused a death.
