Powerful workers keep the lights on over Christmas

While most of us will join family and friends in traditional Christmas Day celebrations, a dedicated team of Ergon Energy workers will help keep regional Queensland’s electricity networks ticking 24 hours a day, seven days a week during the festive season.
Chief Operating Officer Ros Baker said many staff will sacrifice Christmas with their families to monitor, manage and respond to any problems across the state’s vast electricity network from Toowoomba to Mount Isa and the Torres Straits.
“As we’ve already seen in this month, it’s a given there will be more storm related power interruptions and while we will be doing our best to minimise the inconvenience, we’re asking customers to prepare for storms, stay safe and be understanding while we work to restore power,” Ms Baker said.
Ergon control centres at Townsville and Rockhampton will monitor the network while staff will be on deck at contact centres at these locations to provide customer service and information about power restoration work.
“Local crews will respond to power interruptions – storm related or not - during the Christmas and New Year long weekends. It’s our response and at times in challenging conditions, that makes the difference – even on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.“
“You can never “storm proof” an electricity network, however Ergon Energy has spent months preparing for summer storms,” she said.
Ms Baker paid tribute to Ergon staff, who because of the nature of their work, will forgo precious time with family and friends over the Christmas and New Year period.
“This is recognition and true commitment to the essential service we provide to our customers and communities. They can rest easy knowing there is a professional group of dedicated people behind the scenes looking after the power system so we can enjoy all the modern comforts on Christmas Day and over the New Year period,” she said.
Ms Baker took the opportunity to wish all Ergon Energy customers a happy and safe Christmas and New Year.
