Incentives offered to get PeakSmart about air-conditioning

Ergon Energy is offering up to $400 cash for customers who switch to the PeakSmart program to help them keep their cool all summer.
Wholesale Channels Manager Brian Elmer said the roll-out of PeakSmart across regional Queensland would help Ergon Energy manage peak demand on the electricity network by managing the energy used by air conditioners connected to the program.
“Customers choosing to be PeakSmart won’t have their air conditioners switched off during load management events but they will run at a lower level similar to economy mode,” Brian said.
“This signal would only be typically sent a few days per year when the network is under extreme pressure.”
“Ergon Energy is providing a cash incentive of up to $400 for customers who want to switch up to five air conditioners to PeakSmart.”
“Modern air conditioners are more efficient. This incentive helps customers invest in a new air conditioner that will keep them cool and use significantly less electricity.”
The cashback is available to install a new PeakSmart air conditioner, or convert a previously installed PeakSmart capable air conditioner to the PeakSmart system.
“PeakSmart has already been a success in South East Queensland with more than 75,000 households on the program already and about 1,500 joining it each month,” Brian said
“We’ve been listening to what regional Queenslanders have been saying about wanting more choices and greater control over how they use their electricity.”
“There’s even an option for customers with air conditioners on the economy Tariff 33 to use the incentive payment to contribute to the cost of converting one of these to being PeakSmart so that it runs on the same General supply Tariff 11 as the rest of their house.”
AEMO’s Executive General Manager of Public Affairs, Joe Adamo, said PeakSmart could help provide greater stability on the Ergon Energy Network.
“It’s another tool to help Ergon Energy manage peak demand events for short periods over summer, when the power system is most at risk,” Joe said.
Regional Queenslanders can find out more information about PeakSmart air conditioners from their installer as well as by visiting www.ergon.com.au/peaksmart or calling 1300 977 421.
