Ergon Energy restored power to Thursday Island earlier than expected last night following the malfunction of a generator set at its power station.

Power was restored to all customers shortly after 6.00pm.

Backup generation sets at the power station were brought into service and Ergon does not expect further interruptions at this time.

Meanwhile work will continue to prepare a further large-capacity generator at the facility to be on standby if needed.

Ergon is also shipping temporary backup generation to Thursday Island today as a contingency.

Customer Delivery Manager Charlie Casa said Ergon thanked its Thursday Island customers for their patience and their enthusiasm towards understanding the issues at their local power station.

“We have some of our very best people ensuring that our backup options on TI keep the power on,” Mr Casa said. “We are also bringing in expertise to analyse and understand all the factors around the initial malfunction of core plant,” Mr Casa said.
