Be cyclone prepared & safe urges Ergon Energy

With Tropical Cyclone Nathan hovering off the Far North Queensland coast, Ergon Energy is urging people to have their storm preparations in place.

Recent impacts from Tropical Cyclone Marcia in Central Queensland have provided a stark reminder that such weather systems can change quickly.

"Experience shows us that cyclones can lead to days or weeks without power for our customers, and people should keep this in mind and have contingencies ready before this occurs," Customer Delivery Manager Tropical North Charlie Casa said.

"More importantly, this is the time to remind yourself and your family about the risk presented by fallen powerlines and flooding – keep these risks front of mind during and after any storm impacts," Mr Casa said.

Ergon Energy had mobilised its internal disaster preparation processes in preparation for TC Nathan according to Mr Casa. In preparation for the cyclone, Ergon Energy has extra crews on standby and is ensuring extra materials, including additional generation – will be available.

"Ergon will have additional call centre operators on duty 24 hours a day to take customer calls, however we urge customers to call only if they have an emergency situation to report or information that can assist with the restoration effort, such as wires down," Mr Casa said.

"If people see any fallen power lines, stay away, assume they are 'live' and dangerous and report them immediately to Triple Zero (000). In case of a life threatening emergency, call Triple Zero (000) or 13 16 70."
