Mackay power restoration continues after violent storms

Ergon crews are today resuming power restoration to remaining customers across the Mackay region in the wake of violent storm activity last night (Tuesday 20/1/15).

Customer Delivery Manager Chester Brodie said fresh crews were on deck first thing this morning to take over from crews who worked through the night to get the majority of 5,000 affected customers across the region back on supply.

The most significant storm impacts, mainly from direct lightning strikes, were in the Pioneer Valley where lightning took out supply to the Marian and Mirani substations, Eton, Seaforth, Nebo, Ilbilbie areas and Glenella in Mackay.

"There were over 8,500 lightning strokes recorded between late yesterday afternoon and late last night" Mr Brodie said.

"This had a significant impact on our network however in the majority of cases crews were able to get supply on relatively quickly after making safe and carrying out repairs to damaged equipment. We had some really good wins last night which significantly reduced the number of customers remaining off overnight."

"We are concentrating our efforts today on around 25 customers in the Eungella Dam area, Mt Christian area near Sarina, Cathay Creek near Crediton. There are also a number of individual faults and no supplies to attend to."

"Access and boggy terrain is an issue for us in some areas, particularly around Eungella and Crediton however our aim is to get all remaining customers back on line by late this afternoon" he said.

Mr Brodie reminded the community to keep safe during the current storm season.

"When cleaning up debris after a storm, exercise extreme caution as there may be hidden dangers. If you see any fallen power lines, don't go anywhere near them, keep others away and alert Ergon Energy or the Police.
