- Ergon crews restore North Rockhampton power after violent afternoon storm
Published: 19 Jan 2015 9:33pm
Ergon crews have reinstated power in the Norman Gardens and Frenchville areas however repairs are continuing in the Lakes Creek area in the wake of this afternoon's short but violent storm.
Corporate Communications Manager Bob Pleash said trees coming in contact with powerlines during the strong wind caused the power loss in all three instances.
Power was lost to 925 customers in the Norman Gardens areas at 5.14pm after a tree hit powelines on the cnr of Yaamba Road and McCartney Street and caught fire. Emergency services and Ergon crews made the site safe and power was reinstated at 6.58 pm. Power was also reinstated to 1,862 customers in the Frenchville area at 7.50pm after a tree was removed from powerlines on the cnr of Marsh and Fenlon Avenues.
Crews are focussing their attention on reinstating remaining customers in the Lakes Creek area after a tree fell brought down lines and broke a pole cross arm in Rockonia Road earlier this afternoon at 4.45pm. This incident initially affected 1,500 customers however Ergon crews got the majority of affected customers back on line by 7.30pm after the site was made safe.
Remaining customers in the vicinity of the fault area are expected to be reinstated around 11pm tonight after repairs are completed.
Mr Pleash thanked affected customers for their patience and understanding while power was reinstated and reminded the community to keep safe this storm season.
"This storm left a lot debris lying around in its wake giving many residents and emergency service workers some unplanned clean up duties."
"Following any storm activity it is important to exercise caution when cleaning up as there may be hidden dangers beneath the debris.
"If you see any fallen power lines, don't go anywhere near them, keep other always and alert Ergon Energy or the Police" he said.
