Trade types

We have a variety of trade types on offer through our apprenticeship program. We vary the apprenticeships available in line with the needs of our business.

Electrotechnology Electrician / Electrical Fitter Mechanic

UEE30811 - Certificate lll in Electrotechnology Electrician

Entry requirement: To apply for this trade type you must have at least one of the following:

  • Completed Year 12 and passed Maths A, B or C, English or English Communications and a Science subject (highly advantageous)
  • Completed equivalent pre-vocational studies including a Certificate II in Electrotechnology, another trade or course or relevant work experience.

As an electrotechnology electrician apprentice you'll learn how to install and maintain high-voltage electrical equipment in substations, as well as how to install the wiring and equipment pertaining to the transmission systems. You'll also do electrical works associated with domestic and commercial applications.

During your apprenticeship you'll have the opportunity to work in differing working environments to give you experience in both the domestic and commercial aspects of the trade. For example, you may undertake work for Ergon Energy's high-voltage customers that include Powerlink, electricity generation companies and mines.

Electrotechnology Electrician / Electrical Fitter Mechanic + AD - Apprentice / Trainee Para-Professional

UEE30811 - Certificate lll in Electrotechnology Electrician
&
Associate Degree of Engineering
(QTAC Code: 907052)

Entry requirement: To apply for this trade type you must have at least one of the following:

  • Completed Year 12 and passed Maths B or C, English and a Science subject such as Biology, Physics or Chemistry
  • Obtained either an OP of 16 or less or an Entrance Rank of 64 or more
  • Completed equivalent pre-vocational studies, another trade or course or relevant work experience.

Please note: You must complete Maths B as a minimum for direct entry into University or Queensland (USQ) or be eligible to study AD Engineering at USQ. For more information on eligibility requirements, please call USQ on 1800 007 252 or visit the USQ website.

During this apprenticeship, you will also undertake university study from your first year to complete an Associate Degree of Engineering. As an electrotechnology electrician apprentice you'll learn how to install and maintain high-voltage electrical equipment in substations, as well as how to install the wiring and equipment pertaining to the transmission systems. Communications Technician

UEE30911 - Certificate lll in Electronics and Communications

Entry requirement: To apply for this trade type you must have at least one of the following:

  • Completed Year 12 and passed Maths A, B or C, English or English Communications and a Science subject (highly advantageous)
  • Completed equivalent pre-vocational studies including a Certificate II in Electrotechnology, another trade or course or relevant work experience.

Our communications technicians are responsible for installing, commissioning and maintaining equipment used for the transmission and reception of voice, image and data signals. For example, you may be installing two-way radios in substations or helping with installations in cars.


Distribution Linesperson

UET30612 - Certificate lll in ESI - Power Systems - Distribution Overhead

Entry requirement: To apply for this trade type you must have at least one of the following:

  • Completed Year 12 or passed Maths A, B or C and English or English Communications
  • Completed equivalent pre-vocational studies including a Certificate II in Electrotechnology, another trade or course or relevant work experience.

Distribution linespersons perform a range of tasks from customer service and metering, to overhead and underground construction and maintenance.

As an Apprentice Distribution Linesperson you'll learn how to:

  • Install and maintain electrical equipment, public lighting, overhead conductors and cables, and underground polymeric cables
  • Conduct switching operations
  • Maintain poles, towers and associated hardware
  • Install and replace energy meters and associated equipment.

Transmission Linesperson

UET30512 - Certificate lll in ESI - Power Systems - Transmission Overhead

Entry requirement: To apply for this trade type you must have at least one of the following:

  • Completed Year 12 and passed Maths A, B or C and English or English Communications
  • Completed equivalent pre-vocational studies including a Certificate II in Electrotechnology, another trade or course or relevant work experience.

Transmission linespersons perform a range of tasks from customer service and metering, to overhead and underground construction and maintenance.

As an apprentice transmission linesperson you'll learn how to:

  • Construct and maintain high voltage towers and associated high voltage equipment
  • Install and maintain electrical equipment, public lighting, overhead conductors and cables, and underground polymeric cables
  • Conduct switching operations
  • Maintain poles, towers and associated hardware.

Mechanical Fitter

MEM30205 - Certificate lll in Engineering - Mechanical Trade - Fitter & Turner

Entry requirement: To apply for this trade type you must have at least one of the following:

  • Completed Year 12 and passed Maths A, B or C and English or English Communications
  • Completed equivalent pre-vocational studies including a Certificate II in Electrotechnology, another trade or course or relevant work experience.

As an apprentice studying this trade you'll:

  • Learn how to set up machinery to enable the manufacture of engineering products
  • Repair and replace components, parts or other items
  • Install plant and machinery
  • Design and manufacture modifications to existing components, parts and other items
  • Maintain plant and equipment
  • Undertake construction and commissioning work.
