It is illegal to undertake electrical work unless you are qualified and licensed. It is also very dangerous, and the risks far outweigh the time and money saved. Ergon Energy's clear advice is 'Don't do it yourself!'. Electrical work may include any of the following:
- Rewiring or replacing power points
- Moving or replacing light switches
- Repairing appliances and cords
- Repairing extension cords and plugs
- Installing any permanently connected electrical product, such as a ceiling fan, outdoor or indoor lights, smoke detector, exhaust fan, etc.
But also includes any work that an electrical licence is required to undertake.
Electrical safety legislation requires that electrical installations also meet strict safety requirements when any alterations to the electrical system are undertaken.
People have died doing their own electrical work, or their friend or family member has died as a result of their unlicensed electrical work. Unsafe electrical work is regularly reported to the Electrical Safety Office, which investigates and prosecutes offenders whenever possible.
If the packaging of an electrical product states it is only to be installed by a 'licensed electrician', please follow this advice. Even if it doesn't state this, call a licensed electrician when you need electrical work done around your home, farm or business.
