Once you have subscribed to the RSS feeds that you want, your RSS reader will automatically update with the latest news/headlines.
What is RSS?
Really Simple Syndication (RSS) is a free notification system used to alert subscribers to changes made to a web site. It is easy to see if a site is RSS-enabled because of the orange rectangular button that is labelled with either RSS or XML somewhere on the page.
What are feeds?
An 'RSS feed' delivers regularly updated summaries of web content, including headlines that link to full versions of that content. This information is sent to you as soon as it is published on the website to which you have subscribed.
How do I read the feed?
If you select an RSS (orange, rectangular) button, you just get a page of code. To access the information in the feed in a readable format you will need a RSS feed reader.
Feed reader choices
A feed reader, or aggregator, is an application that runs in the background, always searching for updates. Feed readers allow you to display and subscribe to the RSS feeds you want. Currently, there are three types of readers - stand-alone, plug-ins and the latest versions of browsers.
A stand-alone reader such as FeedDemon processes your feeds for you. It is your news hunter and gatherer and is able to be customised for your specific needs.
Plug-in readers, such as Pluck, plug right in and extend the functionality of existing programs, such as Internet Explorer and Outlook.
The latest versions of web browsers, such as Internet Explorer 7 or Firefox 2, support direct feeds. In these browsers you can simply click on the feed link to view or subscribe to it.
Subscribing to RSS feeds
To subscribe to our RSS feed using a stand-alone reader or plug-in, right click on the orange subscribe icon on the top left of the page and select "Copy Shortcut" or "Copy Link Location" to copy the location (URL) of the service. Paste this location into your reader by following the instructions within that application.
Another method is to select a feed link to open in a new window. Select the URL in the address bar and copy and paste it into your feed reader.
If you are using the latest version of Firefox or Internet Explorer as your web browser, you can simply select the feed link and start 'feeding'.
Reading articles
Once you have subscribed to the RSS feeds that you want, your RSS reader will automatically update with the latest news/headlines.
The feed reader will present you with easy-to-browse headlines and short summaries with links to the full article. You can see what's new, and read only those articles that interest you.
