Safety is the number one priority for Ergon Energy - safety for our employees, our customers and the community.
Within Ergon Energy, we are committed to making safety an integral part of our organisation and as part of this we have implemented our ALWAYS SAFE program. ALWAYS SAFE challenges us, as Ergon Energy employees, to do all we can to ensure our own safety and that of our workmates:

Our workplace safety performance is comparable to industry benchmarks. Our Lost Time Injury Frequency Rate (LTIFR) (which is the number of hours lost to injury per million person hours) was 4.32 as at 30 June 2008. Our All Injury Frequency Rate which includes lost time injuries and medical treatment injuries was 11.24 as at 30 June 2008.
Zero Injuries is our Goal
A work environment free of injury and illness is a long-term goal for Ergon Energy and we have integrated a world-class Health & Safety Management System into our business. This system is underpinned by a behavioral safety program and includes the Zero Incident Process (ZIP) which helps our employees to manage all aspects of their health, safety and general well being.
The Ergon Energy Safety Management Plan has been developed to outline and align the whole-of-business safety-related tactics, supporting initiatives and management responsibilities to achieve our safety goal. Our Health and Safety Policy (PDF 274kb) articulates our commitment to providing a safe working environment and giving the highest priority to the health and safety of our employees, contractors and members of the public.
Safety Reward & Recognition
We reward our employees for safe working behaviours and encourage our people to be proactive about safety through our Power Aid program. By demonstrating proactive, positive and innovative HSE (Health, Safety and Environmental) behaviours, employees can earn points, which are then turned into charity dollars that support a range of Queensland charities. Over 1.3 million Power Aid points have been earned by employees since the launch of the program in March 2004. As a result, approximately $1.3 million has gone towards various Queensland charities. So while we reward our employees for their safety efforts, we can also give back to the community in which we operate - everybody wins.
Proactive Health, Fitness & Well Being Programs
Ergon Energy's Health & Safety Services Group provides employees with proactive health programs to assist them in achieving personal responsibility for health and safety. These programs include:
- Skin cancer screening
- Flu vaccinations
- A health and well being program
- An Employee Assistance Program which delivers tailored support to employees when needed through our external provider, IPS Worldwide.
Continually working towards better safety
Every significant safety incident within Ergon Energy is rigorously investigated by our team of expert investigators, analysts and auditors. The team works with us to identify the root causes of incidents and assist in developing action plans to help prevent a recurrence of any significant incident.
