We have a variety of trade types on offer through our apprenticeship program.

We vary the apprenticeships available in line with the needs of our business. The trades above marked with an asterisk (*) will not be available in our 2012 apprenticeship program.

Description of trade

Systems Electrician/Electrical Fitter Mechanic

Cert lll in Electrotechnology (ET) Systems Electrician
(National Qualification Code: UTE31199)
Entry requirement: Year 12 (or equivalent)

As a systems electrician apprentice you'll learn how to install and maintain high-voltage electrical equipment in substations, as well as how to install the wiring and equipment pertaining to the transmission systems. You'll also do electrical works associated with domestic and commercial applications.

During your apprenticeship you'll have the opportunity to work in differing working environments to give you experience in both the domestic and commercial aspects of the trade. For example, you may undertake work for Ergon Energy's high-voltage customers that include Powerlink, electricity generation companies and mines.

Communications Technician

Cert lll Electrotechnology (ET) Communications
(National Qualification Code: UTE30499)
Entry requirement: Year 12 (or equivalent)

Our communications technicians are responsible for installing, commissioning and maintaining equipment used for the transmission and reception of voice, image and data signals. For example, you may be installing two-way radios in substations or helping with installations in cars.

Distribution Linesperson/Electrical Powerline Linesperson

Transmission Linesperson/Electrical Transmission Linesperson

Cert lll in ESI Distribution (Powerline)
(National Qualification Code: UTE30198)
Entry requirement: Year 10 (or equivalent)

Distribution linespersons perform a range of tasks from customer service and metering, to overhead and underground construction and maintenance.

As an apprentice distribution linesperson you'll learn how to:

  • Install and maintain electrical equipment, public lighting, overhead conductors and cables, and underground polymeric cables
  • Conduct switching operations
  • Maintain poles, towers and associated hardware
  • Install and replace energy meters and associated equipment.

Sheet Metal Worker*

Cert III in Engineering - Fabrication (Sheet Metal Working)
Entry requirement: Year 10 (or equivalent)

As a sheet metal worker apprentice, you'll learn about the production, manufacture and repair of a wide range of light metal products including ducts for air-conditioning, hospitals and catering equipment, office furniture, refrigeration cabinets, tanks, vats, and pipes, using thin, flat sheets of metal.


Fitter & Turner and Diesel Fitter

Cert lll in Engineering - Mechanical Focus
(National Qualification Code: MEM30298)
Entry requirement: Year 10 (or equivalent)

As an apprentice studying this trade you'll:

  • Learn how to set up machinery to enable the manufacture of engineering products
  • Repair and replace components, parts or other items
  • Install plant and machinery
  • Design and manufacture modifications to existing components, parts and other items
  • Maintain plant and equipment
  • Undertake construction and commissioning work.

Boilermaker

Cert III in Engineering - Fabrication (Boiler Making)
Entry requirement: Year 10 (or equivalent)

As an apprentice boilermaker you'll work with heavy gauge steel - cutting, shaping, assembling and welding. You'll learn how to fabricate and develop items manufactured from plate materials; generally in steel of varying thickness, but you may also work with other materials.
