The Recruitment Process

Ergon Energy Apprentice recruitment process

Step 1: Application Form & Resume

Your first step in the process is to complete an application on-line. You'll also need to submit a resume, provide details of previous work experience and referees, and answer some behavioural and basic knowledge questions. Application forms will be available only between the specified recruitment drive dates.

We use behavioural questions and basic knowledge to ensure that we evaluate each applicant fairly. Your responses to these questions help us to choose the applicants we believe would be most suitable for the jobs. This process ensures that each applicant is assessed on a level playing field.

Responses to these questions are a major tool used throughout the recruitment process to short-list candidates. So, ensure you put effort into these responses.

Step 2: Unsupervised On-line Aptitude Testing

If your application is chosen to continue in the process, you'll be invited to undertake several online aptitude tests, which you can complete in your own time at home or anywhere else you choose. Testing will usually include:

  • Quantitative reasoning (maths)
  • Mechanical reasoning.

There's no need to study for these tests however practice tests are available by searching online if you would like to refresh your skills. These tests measure your abilities as they relate to the role of an electrical industry technical employee. Results will be kept confidential and will not be provided to applicants once completed.

Step 3: Testing Day / Assessment Centre

The next stage in the process, for those who are successful, is to be invited to attend a testing day/assessment centre in a regional centre such as Cairns, Townsville, Mackay, Rockhampton, Maryborough, Toowoomba, or Brisbane (dependent on numbers and locations).

The day is broken down into two stages.

Stage 1 – further online testing is undertaken to verify your unsupervised results
(approximately 1 ½ hours)

  • Employment mathematics
  • Verbal reasoning.

If you are successful at stage 1 you will be invited to remain for stage 2. Unfortunately, not all attendees will necessarily be successful at this stage. We will assess your results and inform you whether or not you will be required to remain for stage 2 shortly after your testing is complete.

Stage 2 – team activities and colour perception assessments
(approximately 1 ½ hours)

This stage involves undertaking two assessed team activities. We will also assess your colour perception. You will also hear from our vocational programs group and the recruiting managers about what you can expect as an Ergon Energy apprentices. This is a great opportunity to ask as many questions as you like about being an Ergon Energy apprentice, studies, travel or the recruitment process.

Step 4: Behavioural Assessment

If you are successful through to the interview stage, prior to having an interview, you will be invited to complete a mandatory online assessment, which is a work based personality tool that measures your preferences, values and motivations.

Step 5: Ergon Energy Panel Interview

If you are successful to the next stage, you'll be contacted by email or telephone to attend an Ergon Energy Panel interview. The panel will have representatives from Vocational Programs and the relevant work group with which you would work.

Interview questions will be behaviourally based and your responses should include relevant examples that outline demonstrated ability and/or experience.

Step 6: Reference Checking

You will be asked to provide us with the names and contact details of two referees who can tell us about your school and/or work performance and experience, as part of your initial application. With your permission, we'll speak to these people about your performance as it relates to the position.

Step 7: Pre-employment Medical

At this stage, you'll also be asked to complete a pre-employment medical examination with one of our preferred doctors. This medical will ensure that you are fit for the work for which you have applied, in addition to ensuring Ergon Energy does not place you in an unsafe environment due to any possible medical condition that you may have.

Final Step: Appointment

If you're successful, we'll make you an offer in writing and confirm your start date. When you start, you'll complete our induction program- to help you become more familiar with our organisation. Once that's completed, your apprenticeship training will truly begin.
