APPLIANCES AND ELECTRICAL FITTINGS

Switch off the power before pulling out a plug and hold the plug, not the cord. Tell mum or dad to always switch off appliances before cleaning them.

Never stick a knife into a toaster to release stuck toast. Ask mum or dad for help!

Electric blankets should be checked at least every three years. As they spend much of their lives in storage, they can easily be damaged. Always store them flat and check carefully before use.

Never piggyback double adapters. Piggybacking is when you plug two electrical appliances into one power outlet. If you, or members of your family, need extra power points, either use a powerboard or ask your parents about getting a licensed electrical contractor to install additional outlets.

While work is being done around your home, get your parents to always check for electrical cables before drilling into walls, floors and ceilings. They should be particularly careful when drilling around power points and light switches as contacting a concealed (hidden) electrical cable with a metal drill bit can be extremely dangerous.
