In the community

Ergon Energy is committed to taking the lead in establishing community partnerships, developing important energy initiatives, and educating the public about the importance of energy conservation and environmental sustainability.

Energy education for kids

Unplugged

'Unplugged' is a dynamic in-school production sponsored by Ergon Energy that explores how people can conserve electricity and continue to live a modern lifestyle. It is an insight into contemporary young people’s rite of passage into adulthood and how the choices they make place them in the greater environmental situation of the planet. Its a share house with two young people balancing study, work, cash, bills and how they can get to the next big concert. Be inspired, confronted and laugh along with today’s real issues.

Ergonia

Ergonia is specifically designed for children aged from 5 to 12 and helps them to learn about energy in an interactive way including where energy comes from, how to use it safely and efficiently, and how they can help the environment.

There's even a Home Safety Check so children can apply what they've learned about electrical safety at home.

Plus there are lots of fun and interesting facts to learn as well as screensavers, stickers, and a game to play.

Solar Schools Program

As part of our sponsorship of the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Solar School Program from 2002 to 2007, Ergon Energy installed solar power systems and energy monitoring equipment at 26 schools throughout regional Queensland. The program provided schools with the chance to educate students and teachers about renewable energy generation with the solar power systems linked to an existing school computer to monitor the power output and greenhouse gas savings.

Townsville - our Solar City

Solar Cities is an Australian Government initiative designed to support a sustainable energy future in urban locations throughout Australia.

In September 2006, the Ergon Energy-led, Townsville-based, consortium won the right to host a Solar City project and will receive up to $15 million in funding from the Australian Government towards the $30 million trial.

The project is trialling a range of initiatives that aim to conserve energy, increase solar energy usage and cut greenhouse gas emissions by around 50,000 tonnes1, 2 by the end of the seven-year project.

Along with Ergon Energy, the Townsville-based consortium consists of the Queensland Government through the Department of Energy and Water Supply (DEWS), the Townsville City Council, and other commercial members.
