Ergon Energy is committed to investigating alternative and renewable technologies for electricity generation at isolated power stations to reduce reliance on diesel generation. Investigations are ongoing and new technologies are continually being explored.

The alternative resources and technologies investigated by Ergon Energy include:

Resources
LNG Liquefied Natural Gas
LPG Liquefied Petroleum Gas
Biodiesel

Methyl-ester derived from animal fats and plant oil. Can be blended with diesel or used unblended in diesel engines.

e-diesel/Diesohol Ethanol derived from plant matter. Can be used only when blended with diesel for diesel engines
Solar

Solar energy from radiation emitted from the sun

Geothermal Wet geothermal - hot water from underground
hot rocks geothermal - injecting water deep under ground into hot rocks to convert the water to steam
Tidal Ocean or river currents that provide consistent flow or movement
Wave Ocean waves providing an oscillating motion
Wind Wind energy caused by movement of the atmosphere from its cooling and heating caused by solar energy
Technologies
Turbines Combustion of gases - LNG and LPG.
Movement of fluid or gas - wind, tidal/ocean current, geothermal energy used to heat a fluid to a gaseous state, solar energy heating a fluid to a gaseous state.
Reciprocating Engines Combustion of fluids and gases - Biodiesel, e-diesel/Diesohol (ethanol and diesel), LNG and LPG
Chemical Reaction Generation of electricity from movement of elements and ions
  • Fuel Cell - Utilising the chemical reaction between oxygen and hydrogen to generate electricity and water.
  • Photovoltaic cells - solar radiation generating electricity
  • Distributed Generation
Solar, Wind, Fuel Cells & other technologies Small generating equipment connected within the electricity grid near or on customers' properties and using various technologies to generate power.
